Curacao is not only a holiday destination for lazy days on the beach. Aside from diving, snorkeling and sailing, exploring the island by bike is a must! There are many beautiful mountain bike trails, crossing the saltpans, along the rugged north shore or through old plantations. These trails offer new challenges time and again, at the same time providing breathtaking views. It’s really is worth the effort to discover Curacao by bicycle. There are a lot of mountainbike trails with varying degrees of difficulty, from quit easy to more technical trails. There are small maps but it is rather difficult to find the routes because they are not very well sign-posted. "MTB Handboek Curacao" gives some GPS mountainbike routes. The book itself is in Dutch but comes with laminated maps and is available at Dasia, VistaBike en OlympiaT (cycleshops) and the bookstores Mensing's en Bruna.

If you would like to get to know more about the flora, fauna and the history of the area you’re cycling through, book a tour at WannaBike and enjoy a guided tour of your choice. Cycling with your children enables you to share an active time enjoying the nature found on the island.

Tips for cycling in the tropics:

  • Cycle in the early morning or late afternoon, and avoid the midday heat.
  • Be sure to take enough water / energy drinks along, and make sure you're well hydrated before you leave. It is advisable to drink about 1 liter every hour while cycling in the tropics.
  • Use sunscreen and good sunglasses
  • Road bikers should be aware that many of the road surfaces may have unexpected pot holes or rough areas and that there may be a lot of traffic depending on where/when you ride.
  • It is highly advisable to wear a helmet, both on road and off road.
  • The off-road mountain bike trails on Curacao have a lot of "pica's" (thorns) making (tubeless) tires with sealant essential as well as a spare tube and/or puncture repair kit.
